Two PhD scholarships: Remote sensing and AI for improved forest mapping and precision forestry

The Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA) at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has announced two vacant three-year PhD positions focused on utilizing artificial intelligence to map forest ecosystems through the SmartForest initiative. The selected candidates will work to develop advanced machine learning models designed to produce detailed forest information at both local and landscape scales, ultimately contributing to sustainable forest management.

The positions are located in Ås, Norway, offering an excellent opportunity to conduct impactful research in a dynamic academic environment. Researchers will also be tasked with comparing newly developed machine learning techniques with existing methods to evaluate their effectiveness and utility in precision forestry.

Key qualifications and tasks include:

  • Developing machine learning models tailored for forest information retrieval at local or landscape scales.
  • Creating and implementing AI-driven solutions to support sustainable forest management.
