Postdoctoral researcher or doctoral student, machine learning and data integration

The Finnish Meteorological Institute is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher or Doctoral Researcher for a fixed-term position to develop machine learning methods for urban climate research projects. Positioned within the Climate Impacts and Adaptation Unit’s Climate Change and Future Cities group, the researcher will be primarily responsible for producing high-resolution climate datasets by integrating large volumes of multi-source data, including climate model outputs, geospatial datasets, and observational data.

This role is based in Helsinki, Finland, at the Kumpula campus, with partial remote work possibilities. The work contributes to the SmartClim and ILMOS-Uusimaa projects, which focus on producing spatio-temporal data for microclimatic variables using statistical multivariate analysis and machine learning to aid urban planning and societal adaptation.

Key qualifications include:

  • A relevant Master’s or Doctoral degree (e.g., meteorology, computer science).
  • Strong theoretical understanding and practical experience in machine learning methods.
  • Proficiency in handling large datasets and statistical multivariate methods using Python or R.
  • Experience with APIs, data integration, data visualization, and working in Unix-based environments.
  • Good organizational skills, ability to work independently and in a team, and strong English communication skills.
