Hi Aleksi! Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your work?

I have a background in ocean and climate dynamics and I have worked mostly with Earth System Models and satellite data throughout my career. Since moving to my current position at the Finnish Meteorological Institute, I have also become more linked to coastal modelling, with topics ranging from marine heat waves to impacts of renewable energy development on the environment.

What kinds of research opportunities or collaborations are you excited to be part of in the future?

Since the coastal ocean is very challenging to simulate, I have become more and more excited about learning directly from observation, and not just simulations as is often the case. At the moment I am working to create models for high horizontal resolution (~100 m) coastal sea surface temperature reconstructions in complex terrain using satellite images, and in the future, I would be interested in expanding the approach to other variables, such as sea surface height.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the Climate AI Nordics network?

I am very interested in applying ocean ML models in different science and operational applications. Unfortunately, we have limited resources to develop ML models ourselves, so if you have a model that you have developed and think could be interesting to test in the Baltic Sea, get in touch!

What is the best way for people to get in touch with you?

Send me an email (aleksi.nummelin@fmi.fi) and hope for the best! Most of the time, I will also answer on my phone, so don’t hesitate to call me if I’ve managed to ignore your email. If the topic is code related, I will also reply in GitHub.
