PhD Scholarship in Multimodal AI for Forest Biodiversity Mapping

The Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO) has announced an opening for a PhD candidate to develop cutting-edge multimodal artificial intelligence methods for forest biodiversity mapping and monitoring. The research project focuses on developing multimodal learning approaches that combine heterogeneous sources of information, including remote sensing, forest inventory data, environmental and climatic data, and emerging large-scale AI representations. These integrated ecosystem representations will be utilized to address critical biodiversity-related knowledge gaps, specifically targeting the mapping of old-growth forests and key biodiversity habitats at regional and national scales.

The three-year PhD position is located at NIBIO’s headquarters in Ås, situated approximately 30 km south of Oslo, Norway. The successful candidate will be enrolled in a PhD program at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) and will become an integral part of the collaborative AI for Nature research environment jointly developed by NIBIO and NMBU.

Key Qualifications:

  • Must not have previously held a research fellowship position at NIBIO or have a previous doctorate.
  • Strong interest or background in multimodal artificial intelligence, machine learning, and geospatial data analysis.
  • Ability to integrate complex datasets with varying characteristics, resolutions, coverage, and levels of supervision.
  • Willingness to learn Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish to at least an A2 level upon employment, with free language training offered by the institute.
