Doctoral Researcher, Atmospheric Sciences

The University of Helsinki is inviting applications for a Doctoral Researcher in Atmospheric Sciences to work on the AI-Dream project. This research aims to combine the speed of artificial intelligence with the physical accuracy of traditional weather models to create faster, more efficient, and highly trustworthy forecasting tools for anticipating weather and climate events.

Based in Helsinki, Finland, the candidate will join the dynamic meteorology group at the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR). The researcher will focus on developing criteria to test the physical accuracy of deep machine learning models while using state-of-the-art methods like Deep Linear Probes to make these models explainable.

Key qualifications for the role include:

  • A recently completed or soon-to-be-completed Master’s degree in Physics, Meteorology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • A strong background in dynamic meteorology.
  • Experience programming in Python and performing statistical analysis of scientific data.
  • Previous experience in machine learning is considered an advantage.
