Associate Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Data-Driven Evolution and Biodiversity

Data-driven life science is transforming how we understand evolution and biodiversity. This tenure-track position focuses on developing innovative computational and AI-based approaches to study ecological and evolutionary processes shaping biological diversity across aquatic or terrestrial environments.

The position is part of the national SciLifeLab and Wallenberg Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS) program, which aims to build globally competitive data science capacity in Sweden. As a DDLS Fellow at SLU, you will receive a competitive 5-year recruitment package (17 MSEK) covering your salary and research resources, including funding for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.

The successful candidate will establish an independent research line within data-driven evolution and biodiversity. The research should rely on large-scale data streams such as high-throughput sequencing, imaging, remote sensing, environmental monitoring, or continuous biological recordings, and apply advanced computational methods including machine learning and artificial intelligence.

SLU provides access to world-class life science infrastructures, national molecular bioscience platforms through SciLifeLab, high-performance computing, and extensive long-term environmental and biodiversity datasets.

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Develop and lead an independent research group
  • Apply for external competitive research funding
  • Publish scientific articles
  • Contribute to teaching first to third cycle levels
  • Participate in doctoral supervision
  • Recieve training in higher education pedagogy
  • Collaborate with national and international stakeholders

The position is tenure-track and constitutes the first step toward a permanent faculty appointment following successful evaluation.

The position is based in Umeå or Uppsala, Sweden. Swedish language skills are not required at the time of employment, but non-Swedish speakers are expected to acquire sufficient Swedish within four years.
