New Strategic Partnership: Climate AI Nordics and Climate Change AI

Scaling Global Climate Action: CAIN Joins Forces with Climate Change AI (CCAI)

We are excited to announce that Climate AI Nordics (CAIN) has officially entered into a partnership with Climate Change AI (CCAI). This partnership marks a significant milestone in our mission to mobilize the Nordic innovation ecosystem for planetary health.

Climate Change AI is a global nonprofit that catalyzes impactful work at the intersection of climate change and machine learning by addressing gaps in expertise, education, and coordination. By formalizing this relationship, we are connecting our regional expertise in the Nordics with a global network of innovators, practitioners, and decision-makers.

Strengthening the Bridge Between Research and Action

The motive for this collaboration is clear: realizing the potential of AI for climate action requires massively scaling up the pool of people and organizations with the skills and networks needed for research and implementation. Through this partnership, both organizations have committed to:

  • Knowledge Exchange: Sharing research, data, and relevant information that can benefit both the Nordic and global communities.
  • Joint Initiatives: Identifying and pursuing collaborative projects that align with our shared goals of accelerating responsible climate action.
  • Capacity Building: Collaborating on organizing events, workshops, and training sessions to further common goals.

A Shared Vision for the Future

This partnership establishes a cooperative relationship that enhances the capabilities and reach of both organizations through shared efforts. As CAIN continues to formalize its structure as a Swedish non-profit (ideell förening), collaborating with established global partners like CCAI ensures that our regional efforts contribute to the broader research-to-deployment infrastructure.

More is different: emergent social conventions and tipping points in AI populations

Webinar with Ariel Flint Ashery, City St George’s, University of London. Social conventions are the foundation of social coordination, shaping how individuals come together to form a society. In this talk, I will present theoretical and experimental findings that demonstrate the spontaneous emergence of social norms in LLM populations, as well as the existence of tipping points in social convention. I will show that agentic AI populations can establish social conventions and highlight how collective biases can emerge even when individual agents appear unbiased. I will conclude by stressing how the ability of AI agents to develop norms without explicit programming has significant implications for designing AI systems that align with human values and societal goals.
